Legacy and emergency access

Who this is for

Vault owners planning delayed emergency access for a trusted contact—executor, partner, or family member—using encrypted packages and NT² sharing standards, not plaintext email attachments.

What you need

TierFree (cloud relay may help delivery; not required for planning)
Vault stateUnlocked; Vault Key DID provisioned
NetworkOnline for contact resolution and release flows
Feature toggleDigital legacy under Feature controls

Steps

Enable the feature

  1. Open Settings → Preferences → Feature controls (https://se.nt2.me/settings/preferences/featureControls).
  2. Turn on Digital legacy if the Sharing section is hidden.
  3. Open Settings → Sharing → Digital legacy (https://se.nt2.me/settings/sharing/legacyEmergency).

Create a legacy plan

  1. Start New plan in the legacy wizard.
  2. Pick a trusted contact from your vault contacts (or add one first under Contacts).
  3. Choose which categories or items belong in the inheritance package. Content is encrypted for the contact's Vault Key DID.
  4. Set a waiting period (delay before release) and optional reminder checkpoints.
  5. Review the summary and activate the plan. Status moves to active/paused per your controls.

Pause, resume, or revoke

  1. Return to Digital legacy settings anytime while unlocked.
  2. Pause temporarily stops the countdown without deleting ciphertext already prepared.
  3. Revoke cancels the plan for the contact; previously released packages cannot be unsent—treat revoke as forward-looking.
  4. After master password change, NT² may prompt you to rebuild the package—recovery state changed.

Release and recipient experience

  1. When the waiting period elapses (and any manual approvals you configured are satisfied), NT² prepares a release event logged in Activity log when enabled.
  2. The contact receives a vault-to-vault handoff consistent with Sharing overview—they import into their own vault; NT² never sees plaintext.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Digital legacy is not a will substitute—consult legal counsel for estate planning; this is a technical handoff tool.
  • Test with a contact using a non-production vault first; countdown and release semantics are irreversible once live.
  • Export a fresh .nt2backup and recovery kit before major plan changes.
  • If Travel Mode hides items, confirm they are still included in the legacy package preview before activation.
